In 1846, German settlers founded Fredericksburg.
During the ensuing years, Gillespie County has evolved into a key agricultural area with a strong reputation for historic preservation. Preservation of the history of
this area has led to a variety of museums.

The National Museum of the Pacific War honors those who served in WWII. The George Bush Gallery offers a walk through the Pacific War.

In May 2000, The National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded Fredericksburg as one of 12 distinctive destinations in the United States. "An appealing place that offers enjoyable historic, recreational and cultural experiences for Americans of all ages." The criteria for this prestigious award included: well-managed growth, dynamic downtown, commitment to historic preservation, locally owned businesses and walkability for residents and visitors.

Local history museums include the Pioneer Museum Complex, Fort Martin Scott Historic Site, Vereins Kirche Museum and the LBJ National Historical Park.
